<p>How do you choose the best self help books? That depends on what you want to accomplish. Are you looking for peace of mind, more money or less fear? Here are five self help books which I have read and can recommend, along with some tips on how to find more that are right for you.</p>
<p>&#8220;Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway,&#8221; by Susan Jeffers, is all about personal growth and building confidence. It addresses the backward idea that we need to wait until we feel no fear before we can act to change our lives, when in fact it is in action that fear is overcome.</p>
<p>&#8220;The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,&#8221; by Stephen Covey, deals with seven essential principles you can incorporate into habits that will make you more effective in any area of life. This one is about character building above all.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Millionaire Next Door,&#8221; by Thomas J. Stanley and William D. Danko is about money. Specifically, it&#8217;s about how people accumulate wealth in the United States. Subtitled, &#8220;The Surprising Secrets of America&#8217;s Wealthy,&#8221; it clues you in to little known facts like the tendency of millionaires to buy used cars, and the simplest strategy of all for getting rich: spend less than you make and invest the difference.</p>
<p>&#8220;Peace Is Every Step,&#8221; by Thich Nhat Hanh, is about living a more spiritual life and finding peace. If you have ever needed a good example of forgiveness and love to follow, this is the man. The subtitle is, &#8220;The Path of Mindfulness in Everyday Life,&#8221; and suggests the method he uses in his own life: mindfulness meditation.</p>
<p>&#8220;The Essential Law of Fearless Living,&#8221; by Guy Finley, is the best of these self help books. Finley has a way of getting at the heart of a matter with stories, metaphors and insight that is transformative. In my experience, nobody does a better job revealing what is really going on in the human mind, and helping us see into our own minds.</p>
<p><strong>Best Self Help Books &#8211; Finding More</strong></p>
<p>There are thousands of self help books out there. If you want to find more of the ones that are best for you, look for those presenting ideas which are new to you. You should be able to learn something after reading a page or two. Why new ideas? Because none of us would need these books if the ideas we already have were working perfectly.</p>
<p>That may seem obvious, but it is easy to fall into the habit of looking for books which confirm our existing beliefs. Believe it or not, there are &#8220;self help&#8221; books out there which will help you defend your desire for retribution, encourage your greed, give you reasons to stay angry and unforgiving, and help you engage in fantasies of instant wealth, health and happiness.</p>
<p>Also, don&#8217;t limit yourself to regular books. Many of the best self help books are on CD now as well, so you can listen while driving or taking a walk. In fact, some programs are only on CD or MP3 recordings, and you won&#8217;t find them in bookstores.</p>

<p>It is impossible to quantify the flurry emotions that go on in the life of an individual at each moment. However, to keep things simple for the sake of understanding, let us assume that human beings can be broadly classified into two categories, one who have self-confidence and the second who don’t.</p>
<p>We all must have witnessed at some point of time how the self-confident people conduct themselves. They are normally very confident in their walk, talk and anything that they do. Sometimes, they can be so marvelously eloquent in their speech that we are left with no option but to admire them with awe. They very often evoke a feeling from within us that is if such is the way ideal men/women are supposed to lead their lives, why can’t I aspire to be like them?</p>
<p>The more time that we spend in the company of such confident people, the more clearly we are able to see the vast difference between them and the people with low self-esteem. The people with low self-esteem are normally so low on confidence that they tremble just by the idea of interacting with others.</p>
<p>Eventually, what identifies an individuals’ confidence level is the disposition of the individual. If an individual conducts himself/herself with aplomb, he/she is considered high of self-confidence, else low on it. </p>
<p>Well, developing self-confidence is within every ones reach. Very fortunately, self-confidence is not something that we inherit from our parents, but is cultivated and conditioned during our growing up years and even until the later part of our lives.</p>
<p>In case you are among the lot that is immensely low on self-esteem and want to give yourself a shot in the arm, the primary thing that you must concentrate on is try changing your basic perceptions and attitudes.</p>
<p>Many people resort to spirituality and chant various mantras as soon as they discover their confidence levels dipping. It is the best method to verbally communicate to ones inner self and recondition ones state of mind.  It also helps in determining that your actions are not true representation of the individual that you are. The mistakes and errors you may have committed are not the correct reflection of you as an individual. They’re mostly temporary in nature and do not in any way represent your true potential, which is boundless.</p>
<p>All this may sound quite obvious or spontaneous, but still may feel like unachievable as well. What is of utmost importance is that you develop strong belief in your abilities. Unless you do that, you will always find yourself slipping back into lower self-esteem condition time and again. </p>
<p>Such an effort is also vital in keeping you off your negative thoughts and tendencies. Nothing can be more detrimental to your efforts to develop high self-confidence than giving into your negative tendencies. You must constantly be on guard against all such habits and actively try to suppress negative feelings whenever they surface. </p>

<p>Most people get stuck in the buttonhole of social phobia or anxiety since they&#8217;re always focusing on their bad sides and having an all negative self-image. Consecutively, they&#8217;re always afraid that people around them will find them fully uninteresting and boring.</p>
<p>This is another area where a self help anxiety treatment can kick in. A good way to do that is to identify 3 of your strongest personality traits. This helps you in boosting up your confidence as well as improving your feel of self-esteem.</p>
<p>Practice good eye contact.</p>
<p>Practice looking into the eyes of people directly. Behavioral therapists suggest that the orientation has to start by a simple &#8220;hello,&#8221; and a return smile.</p>
<p>Stay prepared for the &#8216;big&#8217; conversation.</p>
<p>Trust me on this! No conversation in the world is that big&#8230; a good way to make sure its good, go through a practice conversation beforehand. Before you take part in any social event, such brainstorming can help you fix 3 or 4 topics to talk over during the upcoming conversation/s. A good self help anxiety treatment is to get prepared to discuss over generic issues like current events, or hot news or simply the weather.</p>
<p>Practice talking to complete strangers.</p>
<p>Social phobics usually avoid close dealings with strangers. So you should practice stepping outside the &#8216;personal comfort zone&#8217; you like to live in usually. Practice asking a complete stranger for instructions or directions. And get used to complimenting people. A pretty good way is to request help/assistance retail salesperson.</p>
<p>Self help anxiety is all about proactive self striving!</p>

<p>Regular exercising will help your body to relax and relieve it from stress and also help toning your body. Therefore exercising definitely helps in alleviating anxiety. <br />You must include a 30 minutes exercising program daily. Exercising helps in producing endorphins. You will see you feel better after you exercise.</p>
<p>3.  Learn how to relax.</p>
<p>It is important to learn to pursue activities that will help you to relax. Listening to music, talking to a friend, working on a crossword puzzle, read a good book, take a walk, a nap, paint a picture, or some other hobby?  Doing things that you enjoy will definitely help to alleviate your stress.<br />4.  Get enough sleep</p>
<p>If you are stressed and suffering from anxiety as a result, then try to get some deep and proper sleep. Sleep is a natural relaxer and sleeping will definitely do good to you when you are suffering from anxiety. Learn to let some of those other things go, and perform some anxiety self help.</p>
<p>5.  Remove a negative attitude</p>
<p>There are various external forces that may add a negativity in you, which might lead to stress. Try and avoid developing any negative feelings. Such feelings can only spoil your day. Inorder to avoid such feelings grow in you may take help of the self-help methods and those are bound to help!</p>
<p>In short it is advised that don’t external affairs stress you and aggravate your anxiety and you just make your living with anxiety easier by adopting some self-help measures.</p>

<p>When we have little self respect for ourselves or a very low self esteem it becomes very hard to be a success at anything. We often fail before we even start something, simply because we tend to avoid situations we fear. The very idea of something can send us running for the hills. But it is this very avoidance that is responsible for compounding the problem. You see, giving up something before you even start is habit forming. Each time you take the easy option you make it harder for yourself the next time. </p>
<p>Denis Waitley once said &#8220;To establish true self-esteem we must concentrate on our successes and forget about the failures and the negatives in our lives.&#8221;  So, the good news is that overcoming low self esteem is not as difficult as it may seem. The view that self confidence is something we are born with is simply not true. It can be learned like anything else and it comes through building on our previous successes and learning from our mistakes. It doesn&#8217;t matter where you start from because success is only relative anyway. What is certain though, to build self esteem you must make the decisions that will allow success in to your life</p>
<p>Imagine how you will feel when you can face any situation with a spirit of adventure and a calm attitude. When toleration of uncertainty is second nature. When you become a &#8220;take me as I am&#8221; person who is not scared to fail once in a while. This is not arrogance, this is simply you being yourself and not dancing to the beat of someone else&#8217;s drum. It is a big problem to go through life wanting to be liked or fearing others opinions of you. All our energy is diverted in the wrong direction. If I&#8217;m making a speech I want to making the speech and not be thinking about what the audience is thinking.</p>
<p>The true path to building self confidence is to devote yourself to excellence in all that you do!</p>
<p>Here is how it works. When making a decision, do your best to choose the better option over the easy option. The choices you make determine whether you &#8216;remain in&#8217; or &#8216;move out of&#8217; your comfort zone. The better option usually takes us out of our comfort zone. You see, we often settle for the easy choice because it is the one we are familiar with, even if it is not helping our cause.</p>
<p>When you have made your choice, devote excellence to the path you have chosen. In the beginning you will still probably avoid some of the more uncomfortable situations but this is to be expected. Mahatma Gandhi once said &#8220;No matter how insignificant the thing you have to do, do it as well as you can, give as much of your care and attention as you would give to the thing you regard as most important. For it will be by those small things that you shall be judged.&#8221;</p>
<p>As your sense of positive pride grows through giving your best, you will increase self confidence and build your self esteem. You will begin to feel good about yourself and have more energy and passion to take on bigger things. We will never conquer low self esteem through analysis alone. Building self confidence is only possible by allowing success into our lives on an ever increasing basis.</p>

<p>There are times when we wish to do our healing work with a counselor or other professional, and there are times when self-help better meets our needs.</p>
<p>Whether you use energy work, journaling, meditation, or any other self-healing approach, there are a number of things that you can do to ensure that you achieve the most growth and healing possible, from your self-healing sessions.  </p>
<p>1.) Choose a focus.</p>
<p>Begin by choosing an issue that you wish to heal.  </p>
<p>If you struggle with identifying specific areas you want to focus upon, you may find it helpful to keep a small notebook with you.  Whenever you notice a pattern, issue or concern that you would like to feel better about, quickly jot a note down to yourself so that you will remember it later.  </p>
<p>Going through personal journals you keep &#8211; or emails you have sent to others &#8211; is another way that you can identify areas you would like to heal.</p>
<p>2.) Make your healing a priority.</p>
<p>Set aside the time &#8211; preferably regularly &#8211; where you will focus upon your healing. Write it into your schedule so that you make a commitment to setting this time aside and do not forget.</p>
<p>Alternatively, build self-healing work into your day:  a 15 minute healing session in the morning when you first wake up, at the end of the day, or at any other time that feels right to you, can be a wonderful way to get yourself moving forward and feeling better.   </p>
<p>3.) Give yourself the time and space you need.   </p>
<p>One of the reasons that people often find that they get more out of healing sessions guided by a professional is simply that they focus much more deeply during those sessions. This is partially because a space is created in which outside distractions are not permitted.</p>
<p>Whether you choose to set aside an hour or a smaller amount of time, create a comfortable space in which to do your self-healing work.  Find somewhere that you can sit or lie down comfortably.  Make an effort to minimize distractions &#8211; turn the phone, television or computer off, and ensure that you have the time that you need to accomplish the personal work you would like to get done.    </p>
<p>4.) Have everything you need, close at hand.</p>
<p>This may include Kleenex, a glass of water, a warm soft blanket, or pen and paper to write down thoughts or insights that come up during the process that you wish to address or make note of.</p>
<p>Have any healing resources that you have found to be beneficial nearby.  If you have a self-help book or journal you find to be particularly helpful, you may want to refer to it.  Pictures of loved ones or of peaceful scenes of times and places that you felt loved and safe, may also be beneficial.</p>
<p>5.) Plan to do something nurturing afterwards.</p>
<p>Part of healing involves experiencing greater love and compassion for oneself.  You can begin to put this in motion both during and immediately after your healing session.</p>
<p>This is particularly important if you have chosen to focus upon healing something that feels &#8220;big&#8221; or particularly painful.  In all likelihood if you stick with the process, you will feel much calmer, better, and more peaceful than you would have thought possible prior to the healing session beginning.</p>
<p>However, the biggest obstacle that people sometimes find with self-healing work is that if they start to feel upset, they may suddenly decide to stop the process.  They suddenly find themselves distracted, or they decide the issue is &#8220;too big&#8221; to tackle alone.</p>
<p>If the issue is too big, seek professional support as needed.  However, in most cases simply taking a moment and reassuring yourself, using any self-help skills you have found particularly helpful, and focusing upon your breathing while thinking comforting thoughts or using helpful imagery, will help you to quickly move past the current upset.</p>
<p>Let yourself know that if upset is encountered, you can handle it and move through it gently.  Make the decision and commitment to yourself to do this, so that this moment will be the last time that this incident, issue or experience, feels so upsetting to you. </p>
<p>You owe yourself the greater peace that you will feel if you stay on track with the process.  It can be easier to stick with a self-healing session if you are aware that you will be taking really good care of yourself afterwards &#8211; whether this is by going for a walk, calling a friend, reading a comforting book, or watching a favourite TV show or movie.</p>
<p>6.) Be kind to yourself.</p>
<p>In the absence of a supportive professional, be a support to yourself.  If you booked a session with a therapist and during it she or he criticized you or gave you negative messages about your past or present difficulties &#8211; or your likelihood to heal from them &#8211; would you feel helped by that?  Would you be interested in going back to do more work with them again?  Not likely!</p>
<p>During your healing process, treat yourself the way that you would expect or want a friend, counselor, or therapist to treat you.  Practice seeing yourself with compassion and understanding.  </p>
<p>7.) If you can not &#8211; or will not &#8211; set aside specific periods of time to work on self-healing, take full advantage of any hidden moments that you do have.</p>
<p>Not every self-healing session needs to be done with the level of detail and care that is described above.  Significant, profound healing can occur simply while going for a walk and focusing upon healing thoughts, affirmations and imagery.  </p>
<p>Making it a habit to give yourself loving and compassionate messages on a regular basis, as you go about your day, can go a long way towards altering your overall outlook and emotional state.</p>
<p>8.) Know your limitations.</p>
<p>If it feels unsafe to you to process a particular personal issue on your own &#8211; or if you are currently feeling completely overwhelmed or unable to cope in general &#8211; it may be a greater act of self-help to make the decision to ask for assistance with your personal healing work.  This help may come in the form of a trusted and supportive friend, support group, or skilled professional. </p>
<p>Know that there is a middle ground between going it entirely alone and being &#8220;in therapy&#8221;.  You can choose to do mostly self-healing if that feels right to you, and still seek professional assistance occasionally, whether this is once a month, a few times each year, or simply as a one time session.</p>
<p>Even those people who enjoy the benefit of regular counseling or therapy sessions will get the most value and benefit from that work, and will they further accelerate their progress and healing by working on their concerns between professionally facilitated sessions.</p>
